Travel Organiser’s Licence) is the UK scheme that provides this cover and issues an ATOL Certificate. When
you pay, the certificate shows exactly what parts of your trip are protected.

ATOL (Air Travel Organiser’s Licence) is a UK financial protection scheme run by the Civil Aviation
Authority that protects people who book packaged flights if the travel company fails. The scheme was set up
to make sure customers either get their money back before travel, or are helped to return home if they are
already abroad.
What does ATOL cover?
When a trip is ATOL protected, the main protections are refunds of payments you’ve made if the ATOL holder
ceases trading (shuts down business) before you travel, and repatriation (help getting you home) if a
company fails while you are away. You should receive an ATOL Certificate as proof when you pay. That
certificate lists exactly what parts of your booking are covered. For example, if you booked flights and
hotels on a package.
ATOL commonly covers package holidays that include a flight and some types of flight-inclusive bookings.

What does ATOL not cover?

passengers compensation for delays is typically handled under airline regulations or separate schemes, not

Importantly, anything not listed on your ATOL Certificate (for example car hire or some extras) will not be
protected. So always check the certificate you receive when you pay.
